Tape Art by Tape That

A comprehensive spatial manifesto of the Tape That Collective.

The exhibition was conceived as a comprehensive survey of the Tape That Collective’s artistic practice. Rather than presenting individual works in isolation, the project brought together years of research, formal exploration, and conceptual development within a single, coherent spatial narrative. It functioned as a “state of Tape Art” exhibition, revealing the full spectrum of creative possibilities the collective had developed over time. With Fundesign’s support, long-standing ideas that had previously remained unrealized due to technical or structural constraints could finally be executed.

The collective approached the exhibition as a total work of art. Architecture, spatial layout, wall structures, lighting, and material choices were all designed from scratch, transforming the venue itself into an integral component of the work. Spanning approximately 550 square meters, the exhibition comprised ten large-scale installations. Visitors were invited to move through a sequence of immersive environments: disappearing into a darkroom, interacting with anamorphic spatial installations, entering an infinity room, and engaging with a dedicated cinema space that presented films documenting earlier projects. A participatory area allowed visitors to experiment with Tape Art themselves by working directly on large-scale Tape That letterforms.

The exhibition opened on July 12, 2019, in Taipei. Visual documentation quickly circulated internationally through newspaper photo streams and media coverage worldwide, extending the reach of the project far beyond the exhibition space. The project was ultimately recognized with a Red Dot Award, underscoring its significance within contemporary spatial and graphic art practices.

The realisation of this exhibition stands as a testament to the trust and openness extended by Fundesign TV, whose support enabled the Tape That Collective to fully articulate their vision and redefine the possibilities of Tape Art as an immersive, architectural, and participatory medium.

The project followed a holistic exhibition concept, uniting design, interaction, and narrative into a single spatial language.
